Saving and Opening FAQs

Back to Top Back to Top

1.1 I want to change the default save and open folder
1.2 I cannot save in this program
1.3 How do I save in standard dialogue mode?
1.4 I want to change the setting manually, but I don't know where the settings are saved

1.1 I want to change the default save and open folder

These settings apply to many 2Simple programs including 2Connect, 2Create A Story, 2Create, Infant Toolkit, 2Calculate and Music Toolkit. Exceptions to this are listed below the instructions.

1) Log in as administrator
2) Open the program.
If you are dealing with a suite of programs you can open one of them. For Infant Video Toolkit, for example, use 2Paint.
3) Go into the Teacher Options (Ctrl + Shift + O) - this is the letter o rather than the number 0!
4) Choose the General or Files tab
5) The "store files in " box at the bottom shows you the default folder. For most programs this will be My Documents.*
6) Click on the 3 dots ("...") to the right of the box to change this setting
7) Navigate to the folder you want
8) You can also change the drive by clicking the down arrow on the right of where the drive is listed.
9) Click OK
10) In the case of a suite of programs like Infant Toolkit: once you have done this for 2paint, it will also work for 2publish, 2count etc (similarly for the Music Toolkit)

You need to do this for each computer

*NB: The name of the area within the Teacher Options may not be the same every time. The programs listed below refer to the save / open folder differently or have different options:

2Handwrite: This has only Windows standard dialogue boxes, so you can browse to where you want to save.

2Animate: The option is under the General tab, called "Changing the working directory"

2Investigate: the saving location in this program is chosen BEFORE the database is created, not afterwards. While using the Database Wizard, you will be asked to choose whether you want to save the database on that machine (in My Documents by default but you can change this) or on the network. For this reason you do not need to save the database again afterwards, but will find it wherever you initially chose to create it! You can still set the default for this in the Teacher Options as normal. It is under the Folder Settings tab, called "Working Directory".

2Review+: It is possible to save all reviews on a shared database so that children can read a review from any computer. Going into the Teacher Options, you'll see a path called "Current Database". You need to ensure that this is pointed to the shared area in which you have placed the 2Review+ database.

2Type: Statistics are saved automatically to the 2Type database. If you have put the database in a central location, the program will save there, or if there is an individual database on each machine, statistics will be saved there.

1.2 I cannot save in this program

There are some 2Simple programs for which there is no save feature but there are different options. These are listed below:

2Email: no save option necessary. If you wish to review emails before they are sent, please tick the box marked Monitoring in the Teacher Options. You can access this through Start > All Programs > 2Simple Software > 2Email > 2Simple Teachers. You can use "red" as both user name and password. Work can also be printed for recording purposes.

Modelling Toolkit: this program automatically takes a snapshot of the screen when an activity is completed. You can use the Teacher Options (Ctrl + Shift + O as usual) to set where these are saved. Work can be printed out for recording purposes.

Simple City: work can be printed out for recording purposes.

Talking Stories: no saving necessary

1.3 How do I save in standard dialogue mode?

These settings apply to many 2Simple programs including 2Connect, 2Create A Story, 2Create, Infant Toolkit, 2Calculate and Music Toolkit. Exceptions to this are listed below the instructions.

In the normal open/save windows, you cannot change the folder you are in (this is to limit file handling and offering very young children too many choices!)

If you wish to allow children to navigate through different folders and use the standard open/save boxes they might use in other programs, you can enable this in the Teachers Options in most of our programs:

1) Press ctrl + shift + o once in the program. (It is advisable to log in as administrator if you wish changes to be made permanently, particularly on a system with very limited access).
2) Go to the tab which specifies open and save options (General / Files).
3) In that window at the bottom is a box which shows where the default folder is - this is labelled "Store files in..."
4) Click on the button to the right of it which has 3 dots on it ("...")
5) A new window should appear. At the bottom are two options with radio buttons next to them - one option is to use our "simple" dialogue boxes, the other is to enable standard dialog boxes.
6) Choose your preferred option and click OK.

You could combine this with setting a default save path as well, for example:

If all the children's folders are located in P:\class b\

You could make the save window start off in P:\class b\ and then enable the "standard dialog boxes" and this will give them the option to then choose their own folder.

Exceptions to this are those programs which do not save and the following:

2Handwrite: This has only Windows standard dialogue boxes.

2Animate: The option is an icon in the top right-hand corner of the simple dialogue box.

2Investigate: the saving location in this program is chosen BEFORE the database is created, not afterwards, so these options are not relevant.

2Review+: It is possible to save all reviews on a shared database so that children can read a review from any computer. Going into the Teacher Options, you'll see a path called "Current Database". You need to ensure that this is pointed to the shared area in which you have placed the 2Review+ database. This will automatically use standard dialogue boxes as only teachers will access this area.

2Type: Statistics are saved automatically to the 2Type database so there is no saving option as such and therefore no dialogue boxes.

1.4 I want to change the settings manually, but I don't know where the settings are saved

A) For the following programs, settings are saved in a ".ini" file, which is inside the folder in which the program is installed. By default this is C:\Program Files\2Simple Software\NameofProgram although there are two exceptions to this listed below:

2Calculate
2Connect
2Create
2Create A Story
2Draw
2Investigate
Music Toolkit

Exceptions:

1) Versions of Infant Video Toolkit up to 2.2. For this program, the settings are stored in C:\Windows, called "ivt.ini" for version 1, and "2ivt.ini" for version 2. From version 2.6 (in testing), Infant Video Toolkit will create one ".ini" file for each part of the suite of programs within C:\Program Files\2Simple Software\Infant Video Toolkit, as well as one ".ini" file referring to the save / open location, called "Files.ini".

2) Versions of Developing Tray up to 2.0.0. For this program, the settings are stored in C:\Windows, called "devtray.ini". From version 3.0.2 of Developing Tray, "devtray.ini" is found in C:\Program Files\2Simple Software\Developing Tray.

B) For the following programs, settings are saved differently:

2Animate: By default, this program saves settings per user to the registry (HKCU > Software > VB and VBA Program Settings > 2Simple Software > 2Animate). From version 2, this can be changed under the settings tab in the Teacher Options to save settings per machine, which will write to the "2animate.ini" file in C:\Program Files\2Simple Software\2Animate.

2Email: The location of the server folder (which contains the mailbox and Sorter) is saved in "email.ini" and "configurator.ini" in C:\Program Files\2Simple Software\2Email. Configurator settings are stored in the server folder (wherever part one is installed) in various ini files.

2Handwrite: This program saves settings per user in the registry (HKCU > Software > VB and VBA Program Settings > 2Simple Software > 2Handwrite > Settings).

2Investigate Mac: This program saves settings to a settings.txt file in the project folder. We do not recommend this is edited manually, although you will need full read / write access to make changes.

2Review+: This program saves settings per user in the registry (HKCU > Software > VB and VBA Program Settings > 2Simple Software > 2Review), with the exception of the database location which is stored in "2review+.ini" in C:\Program Files\2Simple Software\2Review+

2Type: The database location is stored per machine in the registry (HKLM > Software > VB and VBA Program Settings > 2Simple Software > 2Type > Settings).

Infant Video Toolkit Mac: Settings are saved wherever the system stores its preferences, i.e. Mac HD:Users:[user]:Library:Preferences (for OSX), Mac HD:Users:[user]:Preferences (OS9). If multiple users are disabled, it might be Mac HD:System Folder:Preferences. The preference files are called: 2paint_prefsV2, 2publish_prefsV2, 2Count_Prefs_V2, 2Go_PrefsV2, 2Question_prefsV2, graphs_prefsV2, V2PublishExitPrefs.

Modelling Toolkit: This program saves settings to a settings.txt file in C:\Program Files\2Simple Software\Modelling Toolkit\Data. We do not recommend this is edited manually, although you will need full read / write access to make changes.

Simple City: This program saves settings to a options.xml file in C:\Program Files\2Simple Software\Simple City\Data. We do not recommend this is edited manually, although you will need full read / write access to make changes.

If you make settings changes as administrator and a pupil still does not detect these changes this suggests that the pupil still does not have read access to these files. You need to then speak to your system administrator to enable read-only access to these files for pupils.

Technician's Note! Any changes you make within the Teacher Options should be reflected within the ".ini" files. For that reason, an ".ini" file can be copied from a customised machine pasted to several other machines in order to make the changes quickly on every machine in a suite.

Permissions FAQs

Back to Top Back to Top

1.1 We have restricted users; which folders do I need to give permission to?

We generally recommend that permission is given to the whole folder in which the program is installed. By default this is on the local drive and is: C:\Program Files\2Simple Software\NameofProgram.

In some cases, the program may appear to work as administrator, but has problems under a restricted user login. This indicates a permissions problem.

For the following programs, it is necessary to have read, write and modify permissions to a Temp folder:

2Animate
2Connect
(this also requires permission to the Data folder)
2Create
2Create A Story

On an XP Professional client, setting permissions to a particular folder is very straightforward.

For example, to set permissions for the Temp folder in 2Animate:

1) Log in as administrator, go to My Computer and navigate to C:\Program Files\2Simple Software\2Animate.
2) Find the Temp folder and right-click on it. Choose Properties.
3) Click on the tab marked Security.
4) At the top you will see a list of user groups and at the bottom you can tick off the permissions they need. You can choose the particular group who need to use the software, or give full control to "Everyone".

For version 2 of 2Animate, the Temp folder will be automatically set by the program in the user's local environment temp folder. This can be customised in the Teacher Options if you prefer.

This method will also work for 2Connect, 2Create A Story and 2Create, by right-clicking on the relevant folder. Please ensure that for 2Connect permission is given to the Data folder.

Where a program requires an area to be accessed by all users (2Connect collaborative mode, 2Investigate, 2Email, 2Review+ and 2Type), this area must have full access rights to it for restricted users.

2Create FAQs

Back to Top Back to Top

1. PLAYING A PROJECT

1.1 My project is not playing back

a) Have you saved as a flash file, and is there a comma in the file name?

If there is a comma in the file name of a SWF Flash file, it will not play back. Please resave the project with a different name.

b) Is this saved as a .2cr (2Create file)? Have you imported images and sounds from outside the program and then moved the file to another machine?

If so, the file may not play back as the program saves an absolute path to these imported objects, not a relative one, so now that you have moved the project, it can't find them. If you save the project as a Flash file on the original machine, you can take the Flash file anywhere, as it will embed images and sounds. If you are importing videos, make sure they are imported and not just linked to (the program will give you a choice) to ensure they are embedded in the Flash file.

2. PUBLISHING TO THE WEB:

2.1 I'm saving as html, but sound and animation are not saved

Please call us to have your version of 2Create updated to 1.5. This version saves as a universal standard file format, SWF Flash, and can be played on any computer!

2.2 I need to play back the SWF Flash file in a resolution other than 800 x 600

Depending on how you are building your school web site you should be able to specify the space that the SWF file takes up – even if the size of the actual SWF ‘movie’ is 800 x 600. For example you could use the code below. Copy and paste it into a notepad file and save as html. Put it in a folder called, for example, aliens with a swf file called aliens (where it is highlighted below, you would put in the name of the flash file you're using and name the html page and folder accordingly). It would then play at 480 x 360 pixels (you can also edit this where highlighted).

<html>
<head>
<title>Created in 2create</title></head>
<body bgcolor="#0">
<center>
<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"
codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=5,0,0,0" width="480" height="360"
id="myMovieName">
<param name="movie" value="aliens.swf">
<param name="quality" value="high">
<param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF">
</center>
</body>
</html>

3. CLIPART

3.1 The clipart folder categories do not correspond with what is inside

This is caused by installing version 1.5 over a previous version. Please remove all versions of 2Create and reinstall version 1.5

2Create A Story FAQs

Back to Top Back to Top

1. PRINTING

1.1 I've printed a story, but only half the pages have printed out

On a very small number of printers, there may be problems printing out all the pages when using version 1.0.0 of the program. This has been fixed for all subsequent versions; please call 2Simple on (+61) 03 5221 1331 or email support@2simple.com if you need an upgrade.

1.2 I've printed a story, but half the pages have printed back to front

On a very small number of printers, there may be problems printing when using version 1.0.0 of the program. This has been fixed for all subsequent versions; please call 2Simple on (+61) 03 5221 1331 or email support@2simple.com if you need an upgrade.

2Email FAQs

Back to Top Back to Top

1. TEACHER SETTINGS

1.1 I need to log in to the teacher settings but I don't know the user name and password

Any of the default user names from the “Adult” group will work. These are all colours, so you could use “red” (user name and password are identical).

2. LOCATING THE DATABASE

2.1 When I run the program for the first time, I'm asked to browse to the server

When browsing to the server, you need to ensure that the last word in the path is “Server”. So, for example, if you installed the first part of 2Email on N drive, the path might be N:\2Simple Email\Server. It is important that this Server folder is the one the program points at, as it is looking inside this for the mailbox, postbox etc.

3. USER GROUPS

3.1 I can't change the names of the user groups / add more

Since 2Email was designed to work towards and teach the Year 3 ICT QCA unit about email, the available user groups are Reception, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 and Adult. It is not currently possible to edit these groups. However, we are aware that some schools would like this option so it is currently under consideration by the developers.

4. THE 2EMAIL SORTER

4.1 I logged off the server, then logged on again but now the program does not send emails

In versions of 2Email up to 1.0.8, the Sorter runs as an application, and needs to be restarted when the server is logged off. In version 1.0.8 onwards, the Sorter runs as a service, and the server can therefore be logged off without affecting the program. If you need an updated version, please contact us on (020) 8203 1781 or email support@2simple.com

2Handwrite FAQs

Back to Top Back to Top

1. USING 2HANDWRITE WITH AN IWB

1.1 When I try to use my IWB pen to write, the program does not record this

On some interactive whiteboards, picking up a pen allows you to write over the top of a program / website etc but it does not interact with it. You can either use your finger or a blunt object such as a pencil to draw the letters (without picking up a pen) or you can put something in the pen tray so that the board does not realise you're using a pen!

1. TEACHER SETTINGS

1.1 I want to add new users and prevent children from adding their own names and changing options

You can find 2Type Teacher Settings under Start > All Programs > 2Simple Software > 2Type > Teacher Settings. This area allows you to add new users. In version 2.0.1 there is also the option to allow / prevent children adding their own names and being able to change options. If you have version 1.0.3 and need these options, please contact us for a more recent version.

The 2Type report utility can also be found under the Start menu.

Infant Video Toolkit FAQs

1. PRINTING

1.1 Sometimes when I print in 2Publish the text overlaps

If this is the case, you may need to change the screen resolution to 800 x 600. To do this:

1) Go to your desktop and right-click on an empty area.
2) Choose Properties, then Settings
3) Use the slider to set the screen resolution

There is a fix available for this issue if this is not a convenient solution. Please contact us for more information.

2. SETTINGS

2.1 Where are the settings kept for Infant Toolkit? I've looked in the application folder and there's no .ini file there

The ini file for Infant Toolkit is in C:\WINDOWS. It is called ivt.ini for version 1, and 2ivt.ini for version 2
This will be different when version 2.6 (currently being tested) is released, and the ini files will be in the Infant Video Toolkit folder.

1. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

This is a known issue. Modelling Toolkit may have some problems running on NT4. We have reported these issues to the developers who are working on resolving the issues if possible.

Music Toolkit FAQs

Back to Top Back to Top

1. MUTE BUTTON
2. STICKY KEYS
3. PROBLEMS WITH SOUND
3.1 I can't get sound working on my computer
3.2 There is no sound in 2Explore / 2Beat / 2Sequence
3.3 I am not sure if WAV works on my computer
3.4 There is no sound in 2Play / 2Compose / 2Synthesise
3.5 I am not sure if MIDI works on my computer
3.6 I changed the MIDI device in 2Play as you suggested, but 2Compose closes before I have a chance

1. MUTE BUTTON

1.1 The Mute button always seems to be on

The speaker icon with the red cross through it that appears on some of the Music Toolkit programs does not actually indicate that sound is not working or that sound is disabled on your computer. The icon is in fact a button which allows you to stop music from playing when you are in the middle of using the program.

2. STICKY KEYS

2.1 My keys keep sticking down & playing continuously

This is actually an intentional feature called “drone notes” or “sticky keys”. What really happens is if you click down with your mouse onto a key and then move off the key before you click up, the key will stick down and play continuously. If you click down & up without moving the mouse from the piano key, it should not hang. It was designed this way to enable a user to play multiple notes using the mouse only. It should not happen if you use your keyboard, and also pressing the “no sound” button (speaker with a cross through it) at the top right should “lift up” all down keys and stop any hanging sounds.

Because this comment has come up repeatedly, we plan to make this an option that can be enabled or disabled through the Teacher Options in a future version. If you are interested in testing possible future versions, please get in touch!

3. PROBLEMS WITH SOUND

3.1 I can't get sound working on my computer

1) First check that other programs (not related to 2Simple) work with sound on your computer.
2) Another good test is to try play the videos which accompany the Music Toolkit.
3) If you don't get sound, check that you have your speakers plugged in to the computer and turned on.
4) Make sure your volume controls are all turned up
5) If you still do not get sound with any program, your computer may not have sound set up correctly. Please report this to your technician.

3.2 There is no sound in 2Explore / 2Beat / 2Sequence

These 3 modules use sound files in WAV format. Try the following to get sound working:

1) If you have a speaker icon on your desktop on the bottom right corner of your screen, double-click it. A number of different volume slider controls should appear in a new window. Make sure all sliders are at their maximum level and that none are muted out. Pay particular attention to the slider control entitled "Wave".
2) Additionally, click on "options" (on the top left corner of the sound control panel) and then "properties". The window which should appear allows you to display additional volume sliders which may not be displayed yet - to display all available volume sliders, make sure all the boxes are ticked, then click ok.
3) Do not get confused between sound controls for PLAYBACK and sound controls for RECORDING. Playback and recording have separate slider controls, and you can switch between them using options --> properties.
4) If you do not have a speaker icon on your desktop on the bottom right corner, click Start - settings - control panel - multimedia. Then tick the box "show volume control on taskbar"
5) If none of the above works, try double-checking Wav works on your computer (see below)

3.3 I am not sure if WAV works on my computer

1) Click Start - Programs - Accessories - Entertainment - Windows Media Player
2) Click File - Open
3) Navigate to C:\Windows\Media and select a .wav file (such as "chimes")
4) Attempt to play it in Windows Media Player.
5) if you have a problem hearing this file, you need to look at how sound is set up on your computer as you should be able to hear it irrespective of whether 2Simple Music Toolkit is installed or not.

Alternatively:

1) Double-click on My Computer
2) Go to C:\Program Files\2Simple Software\Music Toolkit\groups\bells
3) Double-click on 1.wav
4) Check if this makes a sound or not – if not, please have a look at how sound is set up on the computer or refer this problem to your technician.

3.4 There is no sound in 2Play / 2Compose / 2Synthesise

These 3 modules use sound files in MIDI format. Changing the MIDI Device should be all that is necessary to get the sound working, as follows:

You need to have version 1.0.90 of the Music Toolkit to be able to change the MIDI Device. To check that you have version 1.0.90, look at the little pop-up window that appears when you launch any of the 6 music programs - on the top left will be the version number. (If you do not have version 1.0.90, contact 2Simple and we will send it to you free of charge.)

Once you have opened 2compose, go in to the teachers options (ctrl + shift + O) and select "settings" tab. Try to change the MIDI device used. Each time you change the selection, it should immediately play the notes "C-D-E". If it does not do this, try select another MIDI driver, until you have one which works.

You can also do this in 2play, and the MIDI Device setting you choose in 2play will affect 2synthesise also.
If changing the MIDI Device does not fix the problem, try double-checking MIDI works on your computer. (see below)

3.5 I am not sure if MIDI works on my computer

1) Click Start - Programs - Accessories - Entertainment - Windows Media Player
2) Click File - Open
3) Navigate to C:\Windows\Media and select a .mid file (NOT a .wav file) - for example Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 !
4) Attempt to play it in Windows Media Player.
5) If it works, you can play MIDI files on your computer - go back to 2play one more time and see if you get sound.
6) If it does not work, your computer may have a problem with playing MIDI files. Please check how sound is set up on your computer or refer this problem to your technician.

3.6 I changed the MIDI device in 2Play as you suggested, but 2Compose closes before I have a chance

1) Double-click My Computer and go to C:\Program Files\2Simple Software\Music Toolkit
2) Open the file "2mt.ini". This will open in notepad.
3) Under the [2play] section will be an entry "midiDriverNumber=..."
- you need to make the same entry for 2compose - add a line to the bottom of the file and type in "[2compose]" excluding quotation marks, including square brackets.
4) Under that line, add a second line with the same "midiDriverNumber=..." as for 2play
5) save the file and exit, then try 2compose again
